Chess as a Pathway to Potential
In a recent LinkedIn post, Tunde Onakoya, founder of Chess in Slums Africa, shared an inspiring story about his experiences teaching chess to children in diverse environments— from the prestigious Martial Chess Club in New York to an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Maiduguri, Nigeria. Onakoya, who holds a Guinness World Record for the longest marathon chess game, spoke of the universal nature of talent and the power of chess to reveal it, regardless of background. He believes, “Talent is universal, but opportunity is not”—a statement that embodies his mission to bring transformative change to children living in some of Nigeria’s most challenging environments.
A Nation’s Education Crisis: Over 20 Million Children Out of School
Nigeria faces a severe educational crisis, with more than 20 million children out of school. For these children, education isn’t just a pathway to better opportunities—it’s a potential means of survival and advancement. Without access to education, they are deprived of the chance to unlock their innate talents, build critical skills, and imagine a brighter future. As Onakoya stated, “These children deserve more than just survival—they deserve the tools to build a future.”
A Vision for Change: Chess and Literacy for 10,000 Children
Driven by a profound desire to make a difference, Onakoya has announced a groundbreaking partnership with the NAFOM Chess Club in Maiduguri. Together, they aim to reach 10,000 out-of-school children across IDP camps in Northern Nigeria. This initiative will go beyond chess to offer a foundation in critical thinking, basic literacy, and numeracy skills. Through this program, Onakoya envisions a future where these children can gain the tools to shape their lives and communities
“When you promise a child something, they don’t forget it. And when you do it for them, they’ll always remember”~Tunde Onakoya
While the official launch is planned for next year, Onakoya and his team are already working diligently to prepare for the task ahead. His post on LinkedIn invites those moved by this cause to join him in creating lasting change for Nigerian youth.
A Call for Collective Action: “Be the Difference”
Onakoya’s call for support underscores his commitment to building a world where access to education and opportunity isn’t determined by socioeconomic status. He appeals to those who believe in the transformative power of education to join hands with him in bringing hope and empowerment to the children of Nigeria. By working together, he believes, we can create a better, brighter future for all.
To learn more or support this movement, Onakoya encourages potential partners and funders to reach out and be part of a change that could reshape countless lives.
