Last month, we discussed reconnecting with our elders and learning from them in order to chart our way forward as a people. We have access to our living elders, those who survived the Civil Rights Movement and African Independence, as well as our departed elders–those whose strategies have been documented in books and more. We also highlighted the values that we should focus on as Black people–individually and collectively–compassion, integration, unity. Finally, we debated the prioritization of political power over soft power or cultural power.
In this session, we’ll take a few of the agreements on which we landed in order to chart a more specific path forward and to continue the conversation. Imagine the following (note that ‘African’ in this instance refers to all people of African descent):
A Tribunal has been called at the UN bringing a case against the US, the UK, Belgium, France and Arab countries for the infinite losses caused by genocide in African countries and the violence meted out against Black people living in the colonizing countries over the last four hundred years. The aim of the Tribunal is to determine what events caused the greatest negative impact on African people and the damages they’ve caused, as well as to begin to calculate estimates for reparations.
- What events should the tribunal focus on? These may be specific acts of violence, periods of enslavement, policies that decimated African households / countries,
- What should reparations include? Tools for inner-healing? Money? Land? Removal of current European influences?
- How should they be calculated?
