On October 4, 2024, the Audubon Center at Debs Park in Los Angeles became the stage for a transformative evening of music, culture, and collective imagination. The event, hosted by PST ART: Art & Science Collide, marked the kickoff for the Northeast LA & Pasadena PST ART Weekend—a celebration of art, community, and interdisciplinary exchange.
Attendees were treated to a vibrant lineup of activities that blended community engagement with creative expression. Local food vendors like El Ruso provided culinary delights, while DJs curated by NTS Radio kept energy levels high throughout the evening. Interactive outdoor activities, led by USAL Project, encouraged a connection to nature and collaboration.
The highlight of the night was a stunning performance by Black Quantum Futurism (BQF), an artistic and cultural movement that reimagines space, time, and liberation through a Black lens. Known for their innovative approach that merges Afrofuturism, speculative fiction, and social justice, BQF delivered an awe-inspiring rendition of MirrorTimeMirror, a groundbreaking piece first conceived by Luise Flügge for Brückenmusik in 2023.
Joining them on stage was Nicole Mitchell, an acclaimed flautist, composer, and conceptualist whose work embodies the spirit of Black radical imagination. Mitchell’s presence added another dimension to the performance, intertwining her mastery of sonic storytelling with BQF’s visionary framework. The audience was immersed in a soundscape that challenged linear notions of time and space while celebrating the power of Black creativity to envision and enact liberation.
This event was not just an artistic performance but a call to action, reminding the audience of the transformative potential of collective storytelling, music, and speculative thought. By imagining and creating futures rooted in justice, equity, and freedom, gatherings like this reinforce the ongoing struggle for Black empowerment and liberation.
As the sun set over Debs Park, the message was clear: Black art and creativity are vital tools for shaping a liberated future. Nicole Mitchell and Black Quantum Futurism provided a glimpse into that future—one where the past, present, and future converge to tell a story of resilience, vision, and boundless possibility.
