The Little Rock A.M.E. Zion Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, has unveiled Varick On 7th, a new apartment complex aimed at tackling the city’s affordable housing shortage. Led by Rev. Dr. Dwayne A. Walker, the project, which cost $24 billion, was a six-year collaboration between the church, the city of Charlotte, and Laurel Street Residential. Named after the first bishop of the church, the 105-unit complex offers affordable housing options for underprivileged families, with tenants expected to move in as early as April 15. This initiative not only addresses the pressing housing crisis in Charlotte but also sets a precedent for community-driven solutions nationwide.
Through partnerships with local churches and organizations, Laurel Street Residential aims to replicate this model to create more affordable housing options in Charlotte and beyond. With amenities such as an on-site gym and state-of-the-art fixtures, Varick On 7th showcases the potential for collaborative efforts to make a meaningful impact on housing accessibility, demonstrating the power of community-driven initiatives in addressing pressing societal challenges.
