Join us for Black Genius, Episode 2, this Saturday May 23 at 9am EST! We’ll have in the Genius Chair Nigerian fashion designer, founder of Wow Wow, Wunmi Olaiya.
When it comes to African fashion, no one is more intentional and visionary than Wunmi Olaiya. Her original pieces are hand-dyed and sewn in Nigeria by tailors and apprentices she trains herself. Constructing timeless pieces of original textile art on the Lagos mainland with local artists and distributing them across the globe, she’s perfected a cultural distribution model that only requires investment to scale to billions in revenue. She’s creating jobs on the ground, training and mentoring youth, and keeping an ancient art form alive, in it’s highest form: adire.
“To watch her work is mesmerizing. To wear her pieces is to move like King Solomon.”
A designer for over 30 years, Wunmi has designed for Ron Brown, Alvin Ailey, India Arie, the Nipsey Hussle Grammy Tribute and sooo many more. Her pieces have become a fixture on the landscape of summer in Brooklyn, and those who wear her clothes walk taller than giants.
Fashion is not about how you look, it’s about how you feel. Wunmi’s fashion is opium of the highest order.
