The Amsterdam News has wrapped up its “Community Matters” pilot program, distributing the city’s oldest and largest Black newspaper throughout New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments. This initiative, which provided residents with free access to the newspaper, marked a significant step in reaching predominantly Black and minority communities. Carmen Quinones, president of the Frederick Douglass Houses resident association, emphasized the importance of the newspaper, stating that it represents and resonates with its readership.
Supported by unions Teamsters Local 237 and 1199SEIU, the pilot program’s success has led to plans for expansion, with hopes to reach NYCHA households citywide. Publisher Elinor Tatum expressed optimism for the initiative’s future, highlighting its potential to provide essential news coverage to one of the nation’s largest Black and Hispanic communities.
